INDUSTRIAL POLICY, CLUSTERING & INCUBATION
Working with local, regional and national governments, GBD has
been involved numerous industrial development initiatives. This
has included;
- identifying strategic sectors and sub-sectors,
- identifying constraint affecting competitiveness and market
development,
- developing strategies and recommending policy reform to
governments.
GBD also has experience in working with industry to improve
collaboration as well as to leverage existing clustering activities.

ASSIGNMENT: Mining Equipment Cluster Initiative
Client: UK’s Department for International Development (DFID -
ComMark Trust), SA Department of Trade & industry, University of
Witwatersrand South Africa
Overview: Managed a team of researchers, carried out a sub-sector
study on the capital equipment industry in South Africa.
Through engaging with various industry representatives, developed a
strategic plan to address constraints effecting industry. (market
linkages, input supply)
Applying industrial clustering principles, identified additional
opportunities to leverage collaboration for improved
competitiveness.
Facilitated linkages between government and industry, helping to
ensure government policies are in line with industry requirements.
